Common North Carolina Car Insurance Questions
What does vehicle insurance cover?
People buy car insurance because of the benefits it provides for drivers who become victims of car wrecks or other vehicle damage. While you might think you can afford the costs of car wrecks and other damages without the help of car insurance, the fact is you never know how expensive wrecks might be.
With car insurance you can substantially reduce your own cost burden for accidents by letting your insurance pay on your behalf. Therefore, you won’t have to worry about the ramifications of accidents putting you into an unstable financial position.
All policies will include deductibles, coverage limits and exclusions for certain claims. However, with the help of your agent, you can customize your coverage to minimize the ramifications of unique losses.
Does North Carolina require car insurance?
North Carolina is an at-fault insurance state, meaning that drivers who cause accidents will have to pay for their own damage and the damage of others. As a result, the state requires most drivers to carry minimum levels of liability coverage. These are:
- $30,000 bodily injury liability coverage per person
- $60,000 bodily injury liability coverage per accident
- $25,000 property damage liability coverage
If you carry the minimum levels of coverage only, you must also carry uninsured motorist coverage at the 30/60/25 limits. Policies with more coverage than the minimum limits must carry combined uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage. Uninsured motorist coverage will pay for both bodily injuries and property damage, while underinsured motorist coverage will only pay for bodily injuries.
How much does North Carolina auto insurance cost?
North Carolina often has some of the most affordable car insurance costs in the nation. Policies average about $540 for a minimum coverage policy and $1,400 for full coverage. Your agent is happy to work with you to find the policy that combines your desired coverage with savings opportunities to keep your rates affordable.
